Putu Sutawijaya

Putu Sutawijaya (born November 27, 1971) is an Indonesian artist known for his artworks exhibited in various cities across Indonesia. He has received several awards for his achievements. One of his notable works is the illustration for the novel "Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin" by Sindhunata. Putu Sutawijaya was born in Denpasar, Bali, on November 27, 1971. Since a young age, he has been familiar with the art world, particularly visual arts. He began his debut as an artist when he was in junior high school. At that time, he was already able to sell his illustration works featuring Indonesian and oriental faces as novel covers to local publishers. Then, while attending art education at the School of Fine Arts (SMSR), he sold his traditional Balinese painting works at the Sukawati Art Market. After graduating from SMSR in 1991, he continued his education at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta, majoring in Fine Arts (1991-1998). Because his life activities revolved around art, he was inevitably driven to create artworks that could be appreciated by the general public. He continued to create new works different from the mainstream at that time. One of his characteristics is the use of male figures in his works. Another characteristic is his frequent use of Indian ink. One of his works, "Looking for Wings" (2002), became a topic of discussion among art enthusiasts both domestically and internationally after being sold at Sotheby's auction house for a fantastic price. Art observers refer to the event, often known as the "May 2007 Incident," as the trigger for the explosion of contemporary Indonesian art in Southeast Asia. Indonesia eventually became recognized as a new paradise for contemporary art hunting, competing with China and India. Since then, his name has been among the top-class artists in Indonesia.
