I Wayan Pengsong

I Wayan Pengsong was born in Cakranegara on December 15, 1943. He was an artist born to the couple I Wayan Gede and Ni Wayan Darti. Pengsong's father was one of the craftsmen who made Badhe (containers for funeral offerings). Despite not receiving formal academic education, Pengsong made significant contributions to the modern art scene in Lombok. His works often featured distinct patterns through the figures he depicted and the subject matter he presented, which encapsulated the cultural activities of the Sasak tribe in Lombok. Pengsong was considered one of the outstanding artists in Lombok. One of his notable sayings was "I paint what does not exist, to become real without pretending," indicating that his artworks were reflections of the environment around him, translated into visual forms.
