Barli Sasmitawinata
Barli was born in Bandung in 1921. He initially studied painting under Yos Pluiments, a Dutch Painter, and Luigi Nobili, an Italian painter. In 1950, he entered the Academie Grande De La Chaumiere in Paris. The following year he studied at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, and graduated in 1956. He has lectured at the Institute of Technology Bandung, Padjajaran University Bandung, as well as Andalas University, Padang. Barli established the Rangga Gempol art Studio and was instrumental in the founding of the fine arts Department of Institut Keguruan Dan Ilmu Pendidikan/IKIP (Teacher's Training College), Gelanggang Karya, and the Jiwa Mukti Fine Art Education Center, all in Bandung. His work has been shown in group exhibitions in Indonesia, Europe, the United States, Asia, and Australia. In 1992, he established his private Museum in Bandung. His solo exhibition was held at the Five Arts Gallery of the Department of the Educational and Culture, Gambir, Jakarta, in 1996. His works have been discussed by Jim Supangkat in Titik Sambung, 1996.
